Threads is conversation-first

Threads sits between Instagram and X: it shares Instagram's account system and audience, but posts are short and text-led. What does well is closer to a conversation than a campaign: opinions, questions, behind-the-scenes and quick updates.

That makes Threads easy to schedule. Write five or six posts in one sitting, spread them over the week and use the time saved to answer replies in the Threads app (Postika does not manage replies).

Limits and formats on Threads

  • 500 characters per post. Threads' API counts emoji by their byte length, so emoji-heavy posts reach the limit sooner.
  • Images: up to 10 per post in Postika (Threads' API allows carousels of 2 to 20 items).
  • Video: one video per post; Threads' API accepts MP4 or MOV up to 5 minutes.
  • Links: Threads allows up to 5 links per post.
  • Topic tag: Threads uses one topic tag per post rather than a list of hashtags.

Multi-post threads (a post with chained replies) are not something Postika schedules: each Threads post in Postika is a single post.

Because the 500-character limit is tight, the character counter is handy when you adapt a longer Instagram or LinkedIn caption.

Threads, Instagram and X

Threads is a natural partner for Instagram: same audience, different format. It is also the obvious place to reuse what you write for X. A practical rule: write for the tightest limit (X's 280) and expand for Threads if the extra 220 characters add something, such as a second example or the context a short post leaves out.

In Postika you can select several channels for one post when the text fits all of them, or create separate posts when you want each network to read differently. See cross-posting for when each approach makes sense.

Using your AI for Threads

Threads posts can be text-only, so an AI connected through MCP can create complete posts in Postika. Postika's default asks it to leave them pending approval.

Prompt: "Write six Threads posts for this week, casual tone, each under 400 characters, asking our followers one question about remote work. Monday to Saturday at 12:00, pending my approval."

A weekly Threads plan in practice

  1. Monday morning: write six short posts in Postika, one per day, each under 500 characters.
  2. Pick a time when your audience is online, for example 12:00 in the project's time zone.
  3. Add an image to one or two of them; keep the rest text-only.
  4. Check the week view: Threads, Instagram and your other networks appear together, so you can avoid saying the same thing twice on the same day.
  5. Reply to comments in the Threads app as they come in.

Threads works differently from Instagram when it comes to tags. Instead of a block of hashtags, each post can carry a single topic tag, between 1 and 50 characters, with no periods or ampersands. Pick the topic your post is really about ("Remote Work", "Indie Hackers") rather than the broadest one, because the tag decides which conversation your post joins.

Links are allowed too, up to 5 per post according to Threads' API, but each one uses part of your 500 characters. If a post exists to send traffic, put the link at the end, keep the text above it self-contained, and tag the URL with the UTM builder so the visits show up as Threads in your web analytics.
